Twentynine Palms is rich in history, dating back to the 1800’s. From Native Americans (Cahuilla, Chemheuvi, and Serrano tribes), gold miners in search of treasures, to early homesteaders looking for a fresh start after the war.
Reminders are this city’s past are all around us from Luckie Park, named after Dr. James B. Luckie, who moved his medical practice here from Pasadena in the 1920’s. The original schoolhouse, constructed by the local residents in 1927 after San Bernardino County denied the town funds to build a school for the nine students who were living here at the time, is a museum operated by the 29 Palms Historical Society to preserve a part of this area’s history.
As you drive about, you’ll notice several buildings have larger than life murals painted on them depicting the area from some of our earliest family’s to desert wildlife, flora and fauna, and one mural honoring those who serve in our military.
Speaking of military, did you know that the 29 Palms Marine Base is the largest military base in the United States? Troops from all over the world will come here to train at this live-fire, combined-arms training facility that encompasses 935 square miles of the desert. About 20,000 active Marines, Sailors and their families call 29 Palms home throughout the year.
